2020 Xavier Monnot "Les Vignots" Pommard - $95
There was a time when we might say this is an "underestimated" vineyard site, but with the soaring prices of Domaine Leroy's Pommard "Vignots", among others, this remains one of the very good vineyards in Pommard. Neal Martin describes it as the "Dark Horse of Monnot's range".
*****JASPER MORRIS BEST BUY***** - 92 Points Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: "Dark bright purple, this Pommard Vignots has a most beautifully expressive bouquet. Two thirds pinot fin planted by his grandfather, supplemented by fruit from young vines from 2013 to give some energy. Perfect degree of ripeness. Bravo, plenty of tannins, good acidity, vibrant. Tasted: February 2022."
FROM BRANDON KERNE, MASTER SOMMELIER, AOC SELECTIONS
I love my Burgundy, and it is no secret. I often prefer the nearly translucent, light styles that dance brightly on the palate and require a near meditative silence to focus on the complexity. Nonetheless, occasionally I am in the mood for something a bit more jovial and generous that allows me to guide friends and family into Burgundy, and in my career Xavier Monnot's estate in Meursault has always delivered good and consistent results. As of late, the wines have become even more fine, and in warm vintages still demonstrate a line of acid and tension that many estates have struggled to maintain. It's unheard of to find a Premier Cru White Burgundy for just over $50 these days, and the Monthelie 1er Cru Les Duresses is a great representation of the value we can find purchasing less famous villages in these very warm vintages like 2020. The whites show an elegant touch with new oak, and despite their ample fruit, always show fresh acidity. The reds are deeply colored, and wear a plush robe of velvet texture. The Pommard "Vignots" is a steal and one of Jasper Morris's Five Star Best Value Burgundies of the vintage. The Maranges will steal the attention of everyone at the dinner table. It's a gourmand style that indulges the senses with its ripe boysenberry, black tea, and incense scents. Xavier is a former rugby player, and it shows in his preferred style of winemaking. As of recently all bottles are sealed with wax capsules for an added touch of style.
