90 Points from Anne Krebiehl, MW, of Vinous "The 2022 Riesling Scharzhof was harvested in Saarburg, Wiltingen and Oberemmel and fermented spontaneously, half in stainless steel, half in Fuder. The nose has subtle yeast notes but comes across as very fresh, with hints of green apple and lemon and a slightly flinty flicker. The palate is exquisitely light and gently sweet. Herbal notions like yarrow and tansy join in with the lemon and the juicy, tart apple fruit. Much length with this weightlessness. (Off-dry)"
EGON MÜLLER: THE ICON OF THE SAAR & SCHARZHOFBERG
By Brandon Kerne, Master Sommelier, & Kelly Rau
Few names In Germany capture as much attention and adoration as Egon Müller. Along with Klaus Peter Keller, Müller's wine are the absolute pinnacle of German Riesling and every bottle, from the affordable entry level "Scharzhof" to the decadent Scharzhofberger Auslese, is nothing short of spectacular.
Egon Müller is based in Willtingen in the Saar, which is a tiny pocket within the Mosel known for especially razor sharp, linear expressions of Riesling. Müller's signature vineyard is Scharzhofberg, a small site on the Saar River with gray and red slate, as well as an unusually high proportion of loess. Scharzhofberg wines are known to be some of the most elegant and longest lived Rieslings in all of Germany, and Müller's version is the iconic bottling from this site. The family can trace its lineage to Wiltingen all the way way back to 1797, and they have been well known on the wine world stage for over 100 years, as legend spread of the Müller family and their legendary Saar Riesings.
The wines have cult status for a reason, so If you want a transformative experience with a wine look no further. Each wine is a kaleidoscope of flavors, from tart white peach, crisp green apple, delicate white peonies, juicy tangerine, with subtle cooling mint and sage, as well as smokey flint note from the slate soils all delicately wrapped in exceptionally racy acid that dances across your palate like electricity. You really can't go wrong with a single wine, and any wine lover must experience Müller's wines and have them on their bucket list.
We also have a special treat tonight for those that want to experience Egon Müller's winemaking mastery at an affordable price with his Slovakian Riesling estate Château Bela.
